Origin

Mid 18th century; earliest use found in ‘Tim Bobbin’ (1708–1786), satirist and caricaturist (real name John Collier). Origin uncertain. Perhaps from post-classical Latin nomine (in the formula in nomine patris ‘in the name of the Father’, etc. (Vulgate)) from classical Latin nōminē, ablative of nōmen.
