Mid 19th century (in an earlier sense). From French remous tumult, agitation, turbulence created in the wake of a moving boat, swirling of a liquid around an obstacle, apparently from remoudre to grind (something) again, apparently arising from a comparison of the swirling movement of the water with the rotating movement of a grindstone.
