In certain types of dehiscent fruits, especially in the family Brassicaceae (Cruciferae): a central framework to which the seeds remain attached when the valves fall away at dehiscence, consisting of the parietal placentae with the adjacent tissue.

Early 19th century; earliest use found in John Lindley (1799–1865), botanist and horticulturist. From classical Latin replum part of a door frame (Vitruvius), of unknown origin.
