Origin

Late 17th century; earliest use found in George MacKenzie (?1638–1691), lawyer and politician. From post-classical Latin res inter alios acta ‘a thing done between others’ from classical Latin rēs thing + inter + aliōs, masculine accusative plural of alius another, other + ācta, feminine of past participle of agere to do.
