Originally: any of several Japanese cypresses constituting the former genus Retinispora (later spelt Retinospora), now included in Chamaecyparis; (also, in form Retinispora or Retinospora) the genus itself. In later use: any of various (varieties of) trees and shrubs of the genus Chamaecyparis and allied genera having permanently juvenile (needle-like) foliage, especially grown for ornament or as hedging.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Horticulturalist. In some forms from scientific Latin Retinospora, former genus name, alteration (after words in -o-: see -o-) of Retinispora from ancient Greek ῥητίνη resin + σπορά seed, with reference to the resinous channels on the outer surface of the seed. In some forms from scientific Latin Retinispora.
