A New World quail, Callipepla gambelii (family Odontophoridae), of desert scrublands of the southern United States and northern Mexico, having predominantly grey plumage with a distinctive brownish-red crown in the male.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.
