A simple large sponge spicule in the form of a rod with two tapered ends (a diactine spicule). Also: (in more complex spicules) a main ray from which smaller rays diverge.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in The Century Dictionary. Alteration of rhabdus, probably after German Rhabd.
