Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in American Journal Pharmacy. From German Rhoeagenin (O. Hesse 1866, in Ann. der Chemical u. Pharm. 140 150; from rhoea- (in Rhoeadin) + -genin (in Saligenin, Sapogenin, etc.)), with remodelling of the ending after -ine.
