German expressionism

A style of art in Germany and German-speaking countries in the early part of the 20th cent., which sought to express inner experience and emotions, especially through the use of distorted and exaggerated forms and non-naturalistic colours; (hence) a style or movement in literature, film, etc., seeking to adhere to similar principles.
