Getúlio Dornelles Vargas

/ (1883–1954), Brazilian statesman, president 1930–45 and 1951-4. After seizing power he ruled as a virtual dictator until overthrown by a coup. Returned to power after elections in 1951, he later committed suicide after widespread calls for his resignation.
