Gilbert Islands
A group of islands in the central Pacific, forming part of Kiribati. The islands straddle the equator and lie immediately west of the International Date Line. They were formerly part of the British colony of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands.
Origin
Named by the British after Thomas Gilbert, an English adventurer who arrived there in 1788.
