释义 | Sir Robert Peel/piːl / (1788–1850), British Conservative statesman, prime minister 1834-5 and 1841-6. As Home Secretary (1828–30) he established the Metropolitan Police (hence the nicknames bobby and peeler). His repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 split the Conservatives and forced his resignation. |
