From early Scandinavian (compare Swedish regional resma ear of corn (especially of oats), Danish regional rusme, rusne stalk or head (of oats), a derivative formation from the same base as Old Swedish ris, Old Danish ris, although the reason for the difference in the stem vowel in Danish is unclear).
