OriginLate 16th century; earliest use found in Philip Barrough (fl. 1590), medical writer. From post-classical Latin ophioglosson from Hellenistic Greek ὀϕιο- + ancient Greek γλῶσσα tongue, with allusion to the shape of the fertile blade. |
