Any of several snooks (genus Centropomus, family Centropomidae) occurring in the Gulf of Mexico; especially the common C. undecimalis, a large edible game fish often found in brackish water.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Bulletin of the United States National Museum. From Spanish róbalo, probably a variant of an unattested Spanish parallel (from lobo + -arro, augmentative suffix) of Catalan llobarro sea bass.
