释义 | Virgin IslandsA group of Caribbean islands at the eastern extremity of the Greater Antilles, divided between British and US administration. The islands were settled, mainly in the 17th century, by British and Danish sugar planters, who introduced African slaves. The British Virgin Islands consists of about forty islands in the north-east of the group, and are a British overseas territory; population 24,500 (2009); capital, Road Town (on Tortola). The remaining islands (about fifty) make up the US unincorporated territory of the Virgin Islands; population 109,800 (2009); capital, Charlotte Amalie (on St Thomas) |
