Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Simonds D'Ewes (1602–1650), diarist and antiquary. From classical Latin orbiculātus having a circular shape, round, used of flowers and fruit (also scientific Latin, 1771 as a specific name) from orbiculus + -ātus. Compare Middle French orbiculé.
