1980s. From Russian rod- in rodit′ to give birth to (Old Russian roditi; cognate with Old Church Slavonic roditi, in same sense from the same Slavonic base as Old Russian rod″ (Russian rod), Old Church Slavonic rodŭ kind, kin, genus, of uncertain origin, perhaps from an ablaut variant of the Indo-European base of ancient Greek ὀρθός) + -inia: see quot. 1989.
