Fresh rushes spread on the floor of a house in honour of an esteemed guest who is a stranger; hence formerly as an exclamation of surprise or welcome on seeing a person who has been absent a long while; also in extended use.

Mid 16th century; earliest use found in John Heywood (c1496–c1578), playwright and epigrammatist.
