Early 18th century; earliest use found in Phillips's New World of Words. From classical Latin parastas square post, upright (Vitruvius) from ancient Greek παραστάς, usually in plural παραστάδες doorposts, gateposts, antae from παρασταδόν (adverb) standing beside from παρα- + στάδην (adverb) in standing posture from the stem of ἱστάναι to stand; compare παριστάναι to stand beside.
