An ornamental fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris (family Dryopteridaceae), native to north temperate regions, with sterile fronds arranged like a shuttlecock round the smaller fertile fronds.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Amos Eaton (1776–1842).
