Used attributive and in the genitive with reference to a standard precipitin test which normally involves placing antigen and antibody in separate wells sunk into a layer of agar on a plate and observing the line of precipitation which develops as the substances meet after diffusing through the agar.

1950s. From the name of Örjan T. G. Ouchterlony, Swedish microbiologist and immunologist, who devised the test.
