The outer region of the ear, consisting of the pinna (external ear) and the external auditory meatus (ear canal), and separated from the middle ear by the tympanic membrane (eardrum).

Mid 17th century; earliest use found in John Bulwer (bap. 1606, d. 1656), medical practitioner and writer on deafness and on gesture.
