Origin

Late Middle English; earliest use found in Lanfranc's Science of Cirurgie. From classical Latin rotula small wheel, in post-classical Latin also kneecap from rota wheel + -ula. Compare Middle French, French rotule, Spanish rótula, both in sense ‘kneecap’.
