Origin

Early 17th century; earliest use found in Edward Grimeston (fl. 1604–1634), translator. From Waterland, the name of a region in North Holland, Netherlands (Dutch Waterland, specific use of waterland, on account of the marshy nature of the region) + -er, ultimately after Dutch (now hist.) Waterlander.
