A tall, narrow circular stone tower with a conical roof, found in Ireland (and also in western Scotland and the Isle of Man) from the 9th cent., probably intended as a place of refuge for monks.
Origin
Late 18th century; earliest use found in Transactions of the Royal Irish Academy.
