More fully Roussanne grape. A variety of grape (Vitis vinifera) originating in the northern Rhône; the pinkish-skinned fruit of this variety, used in making white wines.
Origin
Early 19th century; earliest use found in Andrew Henderson (1783–1835), portrait painter. From French roussanne from Occitan rossana, specific use as noun of feminine of rossan (of fruits) reddish. The grape variety is so named on account of its colour.
