A widely distributed aquatic plant having oval floating leaves, submerged stems coated in mucilage, and small purple flowers, Brasenia schreberi (family Cabombaceae).
Origin
Early 19th century; earliest use found in Amos Eaton (1776–1842). From water + shield, after scientific Latin Hydropeltis, former genus name.
