Any of several speedwells (genus Veronica) that grow in or near shallow water; especially V. anagallis-aquatica (with blue flowers), V. catenata (with pink, blue, or white flowers), and common brooklime, V. beccabunga.
Origin
Late 17th century; earliest use found in John Ray (1627–1705), naturalist and theologian. From water + speedwell, probably after post-classical Latin veronica aquatica.
