To correct (a lens or sight defect) so that there is an aberration opposite to that of the uncorrected lens or defect; specifically to correct for chromatic aberration to such an extent that violet light is focused beyond red light. 2 [with object] To make an excessive correction to; to correct (an error, etc.) in excess of that required, so as to cause error in the opposite direction. 3 [no object] To correct excessively; to make too great a correction for an error, etc., so as to cause error in the opposite direction; to overcompensate.
