Any of various long-eared, long-tailed Australian rodents of the former genus Hapalotis (family Muridae), now placed in the genera Notomys (hopping mice) and Conilurus (rabbit rats).
Half of the dozen or so recorded species became extinct during the 19th and early 20th centuries..
Origin
Mid 19th century. From scientific Latin Hapalotis, former genus name from ancient Greek ἁπαλός soft (of unknown origin) + οὐτ-, οὖς ear.
