Attributive Designating the principle that, in the absence of mutation and selection, the frequencies of genes and alleles in an interbreeding population of diploid organisms will stay constant over time; relating to, or described by this principle.
  • The Hardy-Weinberg principle applies to an idealized situation of an infinitely large population into or out of which there is no migration, consisting of exclusively diploid, randomly mating individuals whose allele frequencies are the same in both sexes, with no non-sexual reproduction or overlap of generations..

Origin

1940s; earliest use found in Science. From the names of Godfrey Harold Hardy, British mathematician, and Wilhelm Weinberg, German doctor, who developed the principle independently of each other in 1908.
