Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Thomas Moore (1821–1887), gardener and writer on horticulture. From scientific Latin Oxalidaceae, family name (J. Lindley Nat. Syst. Bot. (ed. 2, 1836) 140; from oxalid-, stem of Oxalis, genus name + -aceae: see -aceous) + -ous.
