Origin
Early 19th century; earliest use found in David Brewster (1781–1868), natural philosopher and academic administrator. From Oxa-hver (also Uxa-hver), the name of some springs in Reykjadal, Iceland, where the mineral was found + -ite. The spelling oxahverite is etymologically more correct, but uncommon.
