A crystalline hydrocarbon, occurring naturally in petroleum deposits, whose molecule consists of three fused cyclohexane rings. Also: any substituted derivative of this compound, especially (Pharmacology ) one having dopaminergic and/or antiviral activity, used especially in the management of Parkinson's disease and the prophylaxis and treatment of influenza.

Origin
1930s; earliest use found in Chemical Abstracts. From French adamantane from classical Latin adamant-, adamās + French -ane, so called on account of its diamond-like structure.
