A diver of the Pacific Ocean, Gavia pacifica, which breeds in the Arctic and winters on the north Canadian coast, resembling the great northern diver (common loon) but smaller, with a black neck and pale grey head and nape.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Spencer Baird (1823–1887), zoologist and scientific administrator.
