Origin
Mid 16th century (in an earlier sense). From post-classical Latin Rutheni (plural) the East Slavs (often used as an equivalent of Russiani), or specifically the East Slavonic-speaking population of the lands centring on Galich and Kiev, probably showing a transfer (of uncertain motivation) of classical Latin Rutēnī, a tribe in southern Gaul, mentioned by Cicero, Caesar, and Lucan; compare -ene.
