释义 | Herod/ˈhɛrəd /1The name of four rulers of ancient Palestine: 1.1 Herod the Great (circa 74-4 bc), ruled 37-4 bc. According to the New Testament, Jesus was born during his reign, and he ordered the massacre of the innocents (Matt. 2:16). 1.2 Herod Antipas (22 bc-circa 40 ad), son of Herod the Great, tetrarch of Galilee and Peraea 4 bc- ad 40. He married Herodias (his brother’s wife) and was responsible for the beheading of John the Baptist. According to the New Testament (Luke 23:7), Pilate sent Jesus to be questioned by him before the Crucifixion. 1.3 Herod Agrippa I (10 bc- ad 44), grandson of Herod the Great, king of Judaea ad 41-4. He imprisoned St Peter and put St James the Great to death. 1.4 Herod Agrippa II (ad 27-circa 93), son of Herod Agrippa I, king of various territories in northern Palestine 50-circa 93. He presided over the trial of St Paul (Acts 25:13 ff.). |
