Origin
Mid 18th century; earliest use found in Andromache to Pyrrhus. From post-classical Latin Heroides, the title of the Epistles of Ovid, according to Priscian, plural of classical Latin hērōis heroine from ancient Greek ἡρωίς (plural ἡρωίδες) heroine from ἥρως + -ίς.
