Mid 16th century; earliest use found in Thomas Cranmer (1489–1556), archbishop of Canterbury. From post-classical Latin adunation-, adunatio mystical union, (of people) meeting, gathering from adunat-, past participial stem of adunare to unite + classical Latin -iō. In recent use after French (rare) adunation.
