Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Robert Baron (bap. 1630, d. 1658), poet and playwright. From classical Latin aequoreus of, belonging to, or connected with the sea (from aequor sea + -eus: see -eous) + -al. In zoological names, after scientific Latin use as a specific name (Linnaeus 1758).
