palisade worm

Any of several large strongyles (threadworms) that infest horses, especially Strongylus vulgaris, S. edentatus, and S. equinus, so called from having a row of chitinous spicules along the edge of their mouths.

Late 19th century; earliest use found in George Rolleston (1829–1881), physician and physiologist.
