Early 19th century; earliest use found in The New Monthly Magazine. From French palourde from an unattested vulgar Latin alteration of classical Latin pelōrid-, pelōris a kind of mussel from Hellenistic Greek πελωριδ-, πελωρίς from ancient Greek πέλωρ monster, prodigy + -ίς.
