Origin

Late 16th century; earliest use found in Henry Savile (1549–1622), mathematician and classical scholar. From classical Latin palūdāmentum a military cloak fastened at one shoulder with a brooch or clasp, of uncertain origin, perhaps from Palūda, epithet of Minerva, goddess of wisdom and warfare + -mentum.
