A kind of Persian rug or small carpet handwoven by nomads of the Afshar tribe in south-east Iran.
Origin
Early 20th century; earliest use found in The Decatur Review. From Afshar, Avshar (Turkish Avşar, also Afşar, self-designation; Persian Afšār), the name of one of the sub-clans of the Oghuz (Turkic) tribal confederation, now living in south-east Iran.
