Old English; earliest use found in Pseudo-Apuleius' Herbarium. From classical Latin aglaophōtis (Pliny) from Hellenistic Greek ἀγλαοϕῶτις, name of a plant with supposed magical properties, also listed by Dioscorides as a name of the peony, Paeonia officinalis, literally ‘brightly shining’ from ἀγλαός splendid + ϕῶς light.
