Origin1990s: from WikiWikiWeb the name of the first website of this kind, from Hawaiian wiki wiki 'very quick'. Wiki, for a web page that can be edited by its users, comes from Hawaiian wikiwiki ‘very quick’. The WikiWikiWeb was the first such site founded in 1995, which was named after the Wiki Wiki shuttle bus that runs between Honolulu Airport terminals. This has since been eclipsed by the collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia founded in 2001. Wiki is sometimes explained as from ‘What I Know Is’ but this is what has been christened a backronym—an acronym formed to explain an extant word.
