1 Zoology. Designating or relating to a specialized type of Golgi complex found near the nucleus and kinetosome in certain protozoans. In early use also: a kinetoplast (now rare or disused ). Chiefly in parabasal body.
2 Histology. Designating cells located just above the basal layer of an epithelium, especially of the cervix.

Late 19th century (in an earlier sense). From para- + basal, after German Parabasale (1854 in sense A. 1; 1911 in sense A. 2 (C. Janicki in Biol. Centralbl. 31 321)).
