Late 16th century; earliest use found in Robert Parsons (1546–1610), Jesuit. Probably from Middle French alchemusi, of uncertain origin, perhaps from Arabic (although no likely Arabic etymon has been identified), or perhaps a fanciful extension of alchemie.
