A person who tames or trains horses with non-aggressive methods, typically using body language and gentle vocal encouragement rather than physical contact.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Samuel Carter Hall (1800–1889), journal editor and writer. Popularized in late 20th cent. by Nicholas Evans' 1995 novel The Horse Whisperer, and the 1998 film adaptation of the same name.
